BAROQUE
Following the Renaissance, was the Baroque era. Named after the fact as a derogatory term, Baroque is known for its ostentatious artwork. During the Counter Reformation, the Catholic church used art as propaganda, emphasizing the mysteries of faith. Artist evoked emotion from the viewer by using tenebrism, movement, and drama.
The Protestant North, however, took a more subdued approach to Baroque art. They used tenebrism, like the Catholic artists, but they focused on more everyday subjects. During this time, genre paintings became popular because of rising middle class patronage.
