Th Enlightenment is a philosophical and cultural movement that happen in the mid-18th century. Influenced by the work of Francis Bacon, thinkers at this time believed in logic, reason, and empirical observation was all one needed to understand the world.
These thinkers often clashed with religion and accepted norms. As science was developing, there was a need to explain things found disparate from the church's teachings. They also fought against absolutist rulers for freedom of thought, religion, and politics, specifically in France.
